How I Learned My Body Needed More Protein

Sometimes your body is not asking you to push harder. It is asking you to pay attention.

SeriesProtein in Real Life· Part 1

I learned that my body needed more protein about 15 years ago, long before bariatric surgery entered the picture.

At the time, I was using one of those powdered-meal programs. I lost weight, reached a place where I felt comfortable returning to the gym, and then started feeling unbelievably tired. I am talking about struggling through workouts and feeling like I could fall asleep right there in the gym.

I called the program's helpline, and after talking through what I was eating and how active I had become, the woman told me I probably needed more protein.

My first response was, "How? I'm already using the protein products you gave me."

She explained that my body needed more than the standard amount included in the program. I did not just take the diet company's word for it. I spoke with my doctor, and the recommendation to increase my protein was confirmed.

That experience helped explain why I had spent so much time feeling tired and sluggish.

Sometimes your body is not asking you to push harder. It is asking you to pay attention.
