Protein Does Not Have to Look Like a Full Meal

How I work protein into my day when sitting down to another plate of food is not happening.

I learned that my body needed more protein about 15 years ago, long before bariatric surgery entered the picture.

At the time, I was using one of those powdered-meal programs. I lost weight, reached a place where I felt comfortable returning to the gym, and then started feeling unbelievably tired. I am talking about struggling through workouts and feeling like I could fall asleep right there in the gym.

I called the program's helpline, and after talking through what I was eating and how active I had become, the woman told me I probably needed more protein.

My first response was, "How? I'm already using the protein products you gave me."

She explained that my body needed more than the standard amount included in the program. I did not just take the diet company's word for it. I spoke with my doctor, and the recommendation to increase my protein was confirmed.

That experience helped explain why I had spent so much time feeling tired and sluggish.

When people hear protein, they usually think about chicken, steak, eggs, nuts, peanut butter, or beans. Those are all protein sources, but they are not the only ways to add protein to your day.

I am not a big bean eater, and I cannot always sit down and eat another complete meal. After bariatric surgery, finding smaller and easier ways to meet my protein needs became even more important.

My personal protein target was given to me based on my health, activity, and medical needs. It is not a recommendation for everyone.

Do I meet my number every day? No.

Do I work at getting closer? Absolutely.

Protein Does Not Always Arrive on a Plate

Some days, my protein looks like a shake.

Other days, it looks like clear protein mixed with cold water, a wafer in my work bag, a protein bar, a bowl of higher-protein cereal, or a snack that does not require me to prepare another meal.

Some of the products I use or have tried include Isopure protein powder, Isopure clear protein powder, Power Crunch protein wafers, BUILT protein snacks, Special K protein bars, Quest Bake Shop frosted cookies, and collagen added to some of my shakes.

Power Crunch is currently one of my favorites because I prefer the lighter wafer texture over many of the dense protein bars. Red Velvet is one of the flavors I really enjoy.

BUILT protein snacks have a softer, marshmallow-like texture. They are okay to me, but someone who loves that texture may enjoy them more than a traditional protein bar.

Quest Bake Shop frosted cookies give me a dessert-style option when I want something different.

One of my newest finds is Raisin Bran Protein. It tastes similar to regular Raisin Bran, but to me it is not as sweet, which I actually prefer.

Always check the full nutrition label. The larger protein number shown on the front of a cereal box may include the milk used in the prepared serving rather than the cereal alone.

When I Do Not Want Another Creamy Shake

When it is hot outside, the last thing I always want is a thick, milk-based shake.

That is when clear protein works well for me. I can mix it with cold water, and sometimes I add a little Crystal Light when I want more flavor.

It gives me another way to work toward both my protein and fluid goals without feeling like I am forcing down another meal.

Not Every Supplement Is the Same

I also use collagen and creatine, but they do not serve the same purpose.

Creatine is not protein, so I do not count it toward my protein total.

Collagen may contribute protein, but I use it as a supplement rather than depending on it as my primary protein source.

Log Long Enough to Learn Something

I am not going to tell everyone they have to track every bite forever.

However, logging your food for a few days can show you what your normal protein intake actually looks like. You may feel like you are getting plenty and then discover that many of your meals and snacks contain very little.

Logging helped me identify places where I could make simple changes. When I need a snack at work, I try to choose something that adds protein instead of something that fills me temporarily and leaves me looking for another snack shortly afterward.

Protein, Fluids, and Fiber

I also learned something the uncomfortable way: when I increased my protein without paying enough attention to fluids and fiber, constipation became a problem.

Protein does not automatically cause constipation. However, some higher-protein routines may unintentionally reduce fluid or fiber intake.

Pay attention to the whole picture. Drink enough fluids, include appropriate sources of fiber, and watch how your own body responds.

Protein does not always have to look like chicken, steak, or a complete plate of food.

Sometimes it is a clear drink after the gym, a wafer in my work bag, a bowl of higher-protein cereal, or a shake during a busy morning.

The goal is to find realistic options that work with your life—not create another routine you already know you will not follow.

Small choices still add up. Feed your body in ways that fit your real life.
